Cotopaxi, c 1927

Looks like prime farming land to me!

Note, Hwy 50, lower right hand corner, is still a gravel/dirt road.  Bernard creek to the left side of the Arkansas looks like a trickle.  This photo is around 1927.

a closer look at the houses:

Of note - no trees.  I can see telegraph wires, outhouses.  The bridge railings are low.  No signs of vehicles or horses.  The photo is taken from the SW side of town, looking to the north east.  No leaves on the few trees, so must be winter.  Interesting how little vegetation of any type there is, even for winter.

Here is another photo.  Notice in this one the taller bridge.  This is dated much later.  The smoke is from the train.  The depot is still intact as is the "livery" barn just to the NE of the bridge.  No trees, very few houses still at this point.  Not much farm land anywhere in sight.

Not sure the date on this photo.  Taller bridge, fewer houses.  Livery station there.  Wondering how many times the bridge was rebuilt.  Looks like the highway might be paved - after 1931.  Fun looking over old photos.  Wish there were more.
