The Hart/Saltiel Connection

It's amazing what you can "prove" about history when creating a family tree.  I am trying to prove that E. H. Saltiel and E. S. Hart were cousins.

We know from the bigamy case that Eleazer Hart at 20 White Lion Street was the uncle of Jane Harris Saltiel so what did I do?  I searched that address.  And from that single web search which snowballed into numerous other sites, I was able to create this family tree.

Is it accurate?  Well, here are some proofs:

1)  We know that Eleazer was Jane's uncle - that fits.

2)  If you look at the 3rd generation - those in yellow, each person across the board named their first son Judah, after their father who had passed away.  Consistent with Ashkenazi naming practices. This would be the 4th generation - they are the green boxes.

3)  In the 1871 England Census, Nathan Minden, his wife Hannah and their children, Evaline, Kate, Michael and Sarah are living in the house of Rachael A. Harris with her daughter, Jane Saltiel.  Now go down the list of Aaron's children and you will find Hannah Hart, Rachel's niece, married to Nathan Minden with those 4 children.

Remember, you can click on an image to enlarge it.

Where is E. S. Hart who was at Cotopaxi?  We know his name was Eleazer Samuel Hart and that he was born in London in 1832.  We know that Ashkenazi Jews do not name their children after living ancestors.  So he could not be the son of Eleazer Hart 1791-1857, the brother of Rachel Hart.

If you look at the children of Michael Hart, another brother of Rachel, and you go down the list, we find a Samuel Hart born in 1832.  Is this our E. S. Hart?

Let's look at the names he used:

Samuel Hart -     ship's manifest, 1854
Eleasa   Hart -    1875 New York Census
Saml. Hart    -     1880 Census
Eleazar S. Hart - 1888 Denver Directory
E. Samuel Hart - 1892 Denver Directory
Samuel Hart -     1894 Denver Directory
Samuel Hart -     1900 Census
Eleazier Hart -    1907 Cook county death index

He was 22 when he came to America.  There isn't much on him in England prior to that.  If we put him in as the son of Michael Hart, that makes him a 1st cousin to Jane Harris Saltiel and a 1st cousin once removed to E. H. Saltiel.  We used to count that as a second cousin.

I think we have a good match.  I will continue to research this aspect as I have time.

Just a couple of side notes.  When doing my research I came across a website that claimed in London in the 1850s, reform Judaism was coming into play and Jew were not necessarily sticking to their custom of never naming a child after a living relative.  In this tree, we see many children with names identical to living relatives.  We need to keep in mind that each child had a Hebrew name and it is the Hebrew name that could not be giving to a living relative - not the anglicized name.

Most of the 3rd generation (green) was born in Middlesex which includes Spitalfields, Strand, Nottingham, Whitechapel, Edmonton, Adgate and other small villages.

We have already discussed why Rachel went to Bath.  To escape the stigma of the bigamy trial. To reside in an Ashkenazi community.

From the above tree, you can see that I've found her son, Judah Lewis Harris living there as wall.  His first 6 children were born there.  But Isaac and Solomon were born in Middlesex starting in 1859 which coincides with the time Rachel, Jane and Emanuel moved back to the Middlesex area.

Emanuel Harris Saltiel was clearly named after his mother's father.  His grandmother, Rachel Hart Harris, was still living in the 1871 census.

Aaron named his daughter Rachel in  1830.

Aaron's son, Emmanuel Hart, named his daughter Rachel Hart in 1854.

Aaron's daughter, Hannah, who lived with Rachel Hart Harris, named her daughter Rachel Minden in 1855.

Did the concept of not naming after the living apply to men only?  Or did all 3 of these women have different Hebrew names?

For now, I think we have a fairly good family tree and a connection between the Harts and the Saltiels.

Fort Laramie, WY - E. H. Saltiel charged with mutiny, found guilty of disloyalty.

Many people have asked me about Fort Laramie when E. H. Saltiel was drummed out of the military at Fort Laramie.   William E. Unrau thoroughly researched this incident and published a lengthy article in Arizona and the West titled "Justice at Fort Laramie: The Trial and Tribulations of a Galvanized Yankee" in the summer of 1973.  I have Mr. Unrau's written permission to republish the article in it's entirety at some future point in time and would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of research he conducted in writing his article.

This is a very condensed synopsis of his article, interspersed with questions for future researchers.

As a bit of background, I need to show that in the 1861 England Census, we find E. H. Saltiel living with his mother and grandmother at 46 Crispin St, Artillery, Spitalfields, Middlesex England.  It shows he was age 16 and a "warehouseman."

Crispin St is located close to Aldgate where his grandmother, Rachel (Hart) Harris was born.

E. H. Saltiel immigrated to America on the "Great Eastern" (ship) sailing on August 18, 1862.

He is listed as a "draper" which means he was a fabric maker.  From "foreign parts".  He is unmarried and age 18.    Being age 18 as of August 18, 1862 agrees with a date of birth of 1844.

Being a "draper" would make sense as the area where they lived in the 1861 census was an area of silk manufacture.

Here are a couple of questions for future researchers to ponder.    It has been written by others that E. H. Saltiel had a university degree and had military experience in England.  How did he do that by the age of 18?  In England, high school is sometimes called "university".  So that would explain how it has been said that he has a university degree - it is merely a high school diploma.

But the military service - how much did he have, what kind, when did he enroll?  No proof has been uncovered to date of any military service in England.  Only what he tells us in the US military records.

In Aug, 1863, he is listed in the US Civil War Draft.  Living at 7th & Chestnut St, St Louis.  His occupation is Peddler.  His is unmarried. Shows his place of birth as “U. S.”  Age 21 in August 1863 makes him born before August 1841 and we know he was born in 1844 in England.

Is this the beginning of altering the facts?  He was not born in the US.  And being 21 would make his year of birth 1842, not 1844.

In the same year (1863) this happened at his address:

ST. LOUIS • A wagon escorted by Union soldiers pulled up to a fashionable home on Chestnut at Seventh streets. Ten women climbed on board for a clattering ride to the steamboat landing.
Among them were the wife of a Confederate general and the lady of the house, which had been converted into a prison for women accused of being disloyal. By Union decree, they were being banished to the Confederacy.
At the landing, soldiers marched them and 13 like-minded men onto the packet Belle Memphis on May 13, 1863, for a trip down the river. One month before, President Abraham Lincoln approved instructions for banishing civilians whose public sympathies were too comforting to the rebel cause.

No record has been located showing when he joined the U. S. military. But his military records show he was employed as a clerk prior to the civil war.  Nowhere else do we find that.   They also show he was a native of Alabama....again, incorrect.

E. H. Saltiel states that he was conscripted into the “rebel Army” (Confederate army) against his own will,  for service in Company B of the Third Georgia Infantry.  And later in his "career" he states that this should not have happened as he was still a member of the British forces.  Remember, no record of his enrollment in the British forces has ever been located.

Nonetheless, he was in the Confederate Army and on September 2, 1864, he was captured by Sherman’s army (Union) at Atlanta.  He became a prisoner of war.  On October 26, 1846, he was
incarcerated at the Louisville (Kentucky) prison Camp. He was placed in the "retaliation barracks" and most likely feared for his life.  From the article "Justice at Ft Laramie":

"That night, taking advantage of the slack security of the prison, he disguised himself with "a huge mustache" and a Union overcoat taken from the officer's sleeping quarters, marched across the prison yard, issued some hurried (and obviously vague) orders to the sentinel, and then boldly walked through the outer gate of the prison.  He then proceeded to the ferry landing, where he "endeavored to catch sight of the passes that all officers had to show" as they boarded the boat for New Albany.  Satisfied with the information he had obtained, he quickly walked to the home of "a banker well known in that city," where he apparently obtained the uniform of a Confederate enlisted man,  as well as papers that would allow him to identify himself as an enlisted man in the Georgia Infantry.
Still in his Union disguise, Saltiel retraced his steps to the prison, gave the guard the proper password, and then walked body to the barracks where a group of Georgia prisoners were awaiting transportation to Camp Douglas for service with one of the Union or "Galvanized," regiments.  "The mustache and brown hair were hurried to the stove...and a plentiful supply of powder rubbed on his face and neck, and there appeared a very young and fair rebel soldier in full uniform, with remarkable dark eyes for one so fair..."
It was at this point that Saltiel began using the name Joseph Isaacs, so that by the time he arrived at Camp Douglas (armed with the properly forged papers he had obtained in Louisville), there was no easy way to identify him with his real Confederate past."

One has to wonder how he thought he could get away with a false identity....but he did...for a time.  From this point forward, he was known as Joseph Isaacs or J. M. Isaacs.

He was next sent to Camp Douglas, IL.  This was a known Union prisoner's camp.  He took advantage of Lincoln's amnesty program and obtained release from prison by enlisting for service in Indian country, aka a "Galvanized Yankee."  He swore his allegiance to the United States.

Now an enlisted man in Company H under Capt Charles W. Ferrers, E. H. Saltiel, known as Joseph Isaacs was promoted to First Sergeant and arrived at Camp Rankin in Colorado Territory.  His Company was stationed with Company I under Capt John T. Shanks.  Isaacs (Saltiel) entertained ambitions of rapid advancement.  They were then located at Fort Laramie, Wyoming.

Ferrers and Shanks were occasionally expected to provide military escorts for civilian wagon trains.  The wagon masters paid nominal sums of money to the enlisted men for their services.  In late June, 1885, Leander Black agreed to pay $1 per day to each enlisted man in Co H & I who made the trip from Rankin to Fort Laramie with his train.  Shanks seized the money at gunpoint and the men threatened violence.  The money was returned to the men and the commanders were able to persuade their superiors that no outright theft had been attempted.  This was known as the "Black affair."

Isaacs (Saltiel) next landed a sympathetic ear to reasonable complaints voiced by the enlisted men and made sure that additional misconduct on the part of Ferrers came to the attention of the regimental Commander in Denver whom he was friends with.  Tensions between Ferrers and Isaacs (Saltiel) increased and Ferrers saw Isaacs (Saltiel) mounting influence in company affairs as a threat to his own position.

An August 12, 1865, Ferrers placed Isaacs (Saltiel) under arrest after a confrontation in which Isaacs (Saltiel's) words were considered a direct attack on Ferrers.  Ferraris then searched Isaacs (Saltiel's) quarters and discovered private correspondence that might terminate Isaacs (Saltiel's) military career.  This included papers showing his real name was Emanuel H. Saltiel, he was and Englishman, an Officer of Cadet in the Tenth Tower Hamlet Riflemen in England....and that his loyalty was with England.

More words/threats ensued and Isaacs (Saltiel) found himself confined to the Fort Laramie guardhouse awaiting a general court-martial  The charges were:

1) mutiny and sedition, carrying a possible death sentence
2) encouraging desertion
3) entertaining and promulgating disloyal sentiments.

His trial began November 13, 1865.  In the interim, he did hard labor.  He was kept in irons.  During his trial, E. H. Saltiel said that he had fought under the confederate flag for 3 years.  The trial was quite involved with much testimony.

The mutiny, sedition and desertion charges were dropped.  He was found guilty of 2 counts of disloyalty to the government.  His sentence was "to be reduced to the ranks and to be publicly drummed out of the service of the U. S. and forfeit all pay now due him and be marched outside the garrison to the tune of the Rogue's March." This happened in May, 1866.

Saltiel openly stated that his allegiance was with England.  This is after he had pledged his allegiance to the US in order to take advantage of Lincoln's amnesty program and join the Union Army in Indian territory.  The charges he was found guilty of were justified.  Today, it might not mean much to pledge your allegiance to a country, but in 1866 - it was a significant crime.

Of note is that he was never charged with using a false identity in the Army.  While he did this to potentially escape death while in the retaliation camp, keep in mind that he was a prisoner, who escaped prison, obtained the false identity papers, came back and used this identity to escape death.

While he was not found guilty of mutiny, he was charged with that.  Mutiny in the Civil War had to be considered a great crime in this country.  I assume that if HEAS had known any of this, they would not have allowed the Jews to come to Cotopaxi.

I will let you decide the character flaws in this man....but it is becoming more and more apparent that at a very young  age, he was incapable of being truthful. He was just 21 years old when he was drummed out of the military at Fort Laramie.

DNA and genealogy

A week ago, I attended a full day seminar in Denver on DNA.  The speaker was Bennet Greenspan who created Familytreedna.com.  He is the go-to source for DNA questions and I decided to ask mine!

But first, a very, very brief intro into DNA and the reasons it's important in genealogy.

yDNA - you test the male of a particular surname.  This DNA goes from father to son to son to son forever.  In 2001, I had my brother "Moore" tested for my dad's line.  I had our mom's brother "House" tested to know the DNA of my mother's father's line.

mtDNA - you test the male for his mother's mother's mother's mother's DNA.  And these "markers" are different from the yDNA markers.  I had my brother tested for our mother's line.

autosomal DNA - you can test yourself to get the matches for everyone else between your father's line and your mother's line.  I had mine done a few years ago.  It also shows the probable migration of your ancestors.  This will find "lost" cousins and track things like your mother's father's mother's father's line.

A haplogroup is an identifier that puts your DNA together with other people who have similar, but not identical DNA.

Pretty cool!  Familtreedna has now tested over 1.2 million people.  My brother and uncle were among the very first back in 2001 with kit numbers around 1600.  Lots has been learned since those early DNA tests.  However, there is no reason to retest because DNA remains the same.

My question for Mr. Greenspan was:

If you have 2 males with the same surname, yet they fall into 2 different haplogroups, can they be related?

His answer (which I have in writing):

You would have to go back 500 to 1000 generations to find a common ancestor.  In simpler terms, you might find that you had a 500th gr grandfather in common!

Can we identify that as a cousin?  Only from the generic standpoint that all humans are related and thus all humans are cousins.

Is this important to the Cotopaxi story?  Maybe.  I'll let you decide.

In a prior blog, I posted this family tree for E. H. Saltiel

E. H. Saltiel's oldest son, John Tammany Saltiel, changed his name to John Taman about 1914.  He had a son, Osborne J. Taman, who is a direct male descendant of John Saltiel, even though he has a different last name.

Osborne had 2 sons.  If they had their DNA tested, it would fall into the same Haplogroup as E. H. Saltiel.

And we can see the ancestry tree for E. H. Saltiel

Next we can go to the Jewish DNA project and look to see if Yomtov Saltiel b 1741 is shown.

He is.  You want to look for this line:

Which shows us that E. H. Saltiel would have a DNA of R-m269.

This is known as the Yomtov line.

Anyone who descends for Yom Tob (Yomtov) Shaltiel (Saltiel) will have a DNA haplogroup of R-m269.  Further, I have been able to verify E. H. Saltiel's ancestors through census records and other documents in England.

So now we know that E. H. Saltiel and the Taman brothers should have a haplogroup of R-m269.

The Saltiel in London has this family tree.

Verification of this line's DNA can be found here - where we find Elias Saltiel born in 1738.  This is known as the North Sea Line.

look for these lines:

Which again show us the Haplogroup is G-M201.

In order for the London Saltiel to be a cousin to E. H. Saltiel, he would have to go back 500 to 1000 generations in order to find a common grandfather in order to establish a cousin connection.

We can safely say that these 2 men are not cousins.  They do not have a common ancestor within the past 500 generations.  Their DNA is in different Haplogroups.

DNA proves they are not related....even through they share a common surname.

That is example number 1 for Cotopaxi.  We have another example.

Isaac Leib Shames and Benjamin Zalman Milstein are brothers.  But they have different surnames.  In Russia, they were forcing young Jews into the army and they were required to serve 25 years.  Think about that....twenty-five long years!  One way around this when there were multiple sons in a family was to find a couple who did to have children and let them adopt one of the sons.  And this is what happened to Isaac Shames and it's why he changed his name.

He could have changed his name back when he came to America.  There was nothing stopping him.  But to honor and respect the family who adopted him in order to help him avoid 25 years of Russian military service, he chose to keep the name Shames.

It has now been as much as 5 generations since Cotopaxi.  What if a Shames descendant were to marry a Milstein descendant and not realize that they have a common ancestor?  DNA can prove that for them!  And what if it's another hundred years down the line, you might want to get a DNA test no matter who you marry!

Cotopaxi also has descendants who were adopted (remember the "Finding Lena" blog?)  She was a Friedman adopted by a Snyder when she was quite young.

We also have in that same blog the story of Sam and Sarah Shuteran, adopted by Samuel Friedman....and they did not know about this adoption until much later in life.  What if they'd married a Shuteran?

First cousins can and do marry and it often works out.  But I just think I'd like to know about it before the wedding ceremony!

I'm starting to think that DNA and genealogy go hand in hand.  Certainly can prove or disprove the facts of a relationship.

The Saltiel/Hart connection - the religious family tree

Here's the Hart family tree:

The common ancestor was an "unknown" Hart.   We now know he was  an Ashkenazi Jew - a German Jew,  Judah Hart.   He had at least 6 children, Rachel, Eleazer, Michael, Aaron, Henry and Elizabeth.

Rachel had Jane, who married John Jacob (Alfred) Saltiell.  They had Emanuel Harris Saltiel.

Eleazar had Eleazer Samuel Hart.  He would be a 1st cousin to Rachel and a 1st cousin once removed to Emanuel.  But an Ashkenazi wouldn't name a child after a living parent.  Rachel's brother Michael, had Samuel, born 1832, who is a match to Eleazer Samuel Hart who was at Cotopaxi.  Again, a 1st cousin, once removed to E. H. Saltiel.

I need help from my Jewish pals!  When I reread the bigamy case....it clearly states that John Jacob was brought up in the Sephardic school.  Jane is a German Jew and therefore I would presume she is Ashkenazi.  She descends from Rachel Hart Harris above.  Jane was an Ashkenazi Jew and  she married a Sephardic Jew and thus E. H. Saltiel was Sephardic?  But by his DNA he was both Sephardic and Ashkenazi?

Because the  Harts were Ashkenazi, this would then explain their kindness to the Colonists.  And it might explain some of the animosities between Saltiel and Hart - which I will show in future posts.

(Both Saltiel and the Harts were British, never spoke Yiddish, and thus the problems communicating with the Russian Jews who immigrated to Cotopaxi.)

Emanuel and Eleazer's children who were at Cotopaxi would have been second cousins.

Emanuel was 38 years old when the Colonists arrived in Cotopaxi.  E. S. Hart was 50.  While I'm happy to have finally connected the family tree of the Harts and Saltiels, I'm now curious about the religious aspects of this tree.

Mom once took our family tree and entered into it all of the medical conditions for each person living, and each deceased person as far back as she could.  Wouldn't it be interesting to create a family tree that showed the religions for each branch?  And the sect or variance within each religion?

Please note that this post was updated from it's original content/questions based on a later post where I made the Hart/Saltiel connection.

Emanuel H. Saltiel's father, John Jacob (part 2) digging deeper - finding more

updated 2/12/17 - go to the bottom of this post for new information.

The article that I posted yesterday about John Jacob Saltiel's bigamy showed that his second wife was Harriet Bates Davison and it gave us their date of marriage as May 16, 1843.  I found their marriage index here:

This shows John's name as John Alfred de Saltiell.  And when I found his prison records, it gives us an "aka" of Alfred.

Once I started searching for Alfred Jacob Saltiel, I found his death record.

He died 27 Nov 1850 and is buried at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, England.  He was born in 1822.   This lines up with John Jacob Saltiel.  And the fact that both his wife and ex-wife state in the 1851 census that they are widows.  He had 2 more children with Harriet (this is the 1851 census):

Now we know that  E. H. Saltiel had a half brother, Alfred and a half sister, Elizabeth!

Looking at their mom, Harriett, she married George Clark Aug 7, 1852:

And we find that Elizabeth and Alfred have changed their surname to Clark in the 1861 census.

I think the next question to ask is whether or not E. H. Saltiel even knew that he had a half brother and sister?  They changed their surname to Clark and in the census record above they are listed as daughter and son, so perhaps George Clark adopted them.

Here's a simple timeline for this story:

Emanuel H. Saltiel lived in Bath, Somerset, England from the time he was born through the 1851 census.

John and Harriett were married in Essex, Elizabeth was born in Bethnal Green, St John, England and Alfret was born in London.

John died in London.

Looking at a map,   Here's Bath  (on the west side of England)  and you can see London.  Essex is just northeast of London.  Bethnal Green is also in London.

Emanuel H. Saltiel was age 6 when his father died.  His father had "remarried" before he was born.  It is probably safe to say the Emanuel never knew him.  Additionally, he probably never knew his half brother and sister.

Two things have not escaped me.  1)  Mary Moore Clarke was on the marriage record above and then Harriet married George Clark later on.  One has to wonder if they were related.  And 2) In the bigamy proceedings, Harriet (2nd wife) states that Jane (pregnant 1st wife) "was out from morning to night."  I believe that just means that she knew what was going on.   Jane was an Ashkenazi and married to a  Sephardic Jew, something that wasn't much accepted at that time.  Harriet claims to have married him as a "christian" in a church.  She did not believe Saltiel was Jewish.

Keep in mind that Jane's mother was Rachel Hart, a brother to Michael Hart, the father of Eleazer Samuel Hart (E. S. Hart) who was at Cotopaxi.  I have always assumed that if Hart and Saltiel were cousins, they were both Sephardic Jews.  However, now we know the Harts were Ashkenazi and Jane married into the Saltiel Sephardic Jews.  It might explain a little of the upcoming court cases between E. S. Hart and E. H. Saltiel.

Pay attention to the detail in writings.  It's fascinating!

All of this in my search to find out what happened to Emanuel H. Saltiel's father.  Now we know that he didn't "just disappear" as other writer's have said.  Genealogy - it's more than just a name in a family tree.

new information:

I was researching something else, and a newspaper article popped up.  This article gives perhaps a better explanation of why Saltiel's father committed bigamy.  It is interesting to note that he claimed his wife, Jane Harris Saltiel, was frail and would surely die soon.  She lived another 44 years and did not pass away until 1888.   You can click on the article to make it larger.

Emanuel H. Saltiel's father, John Saltiell

I have always thought it would be so much fun to find out that I descended from Jesse James or some other wild outlaw!  But I also know plenty of people who would be horrified to find anything criminal in their ancestry!  Do you look at criminal records when searching your ancestry?

I found an article on Emanuel H. Saltiel's father that is quite interesting, but first a little background information.  Emanuel H. Saltiel's father was John Jacob Saltiel.  He married Jane Harris in May 18, 1843.  Emanuel H. was born Oct 14, 1844 in Bath, Somerset, England.  His father (John Jacob Saltiel) was charged with bigamy on July 1, 1844.  This was just one year, 1 1/2 months after he married Jane (Emanuel H Saltiel's mother).  And just three months before Emanuel H. Saltiel was born.
(transcription below the images)

July 1, 1844
1840. JOHN SALTIELL was indicted for bigamy.
MESSRS. PAYNE and DOANE conducted the Prosecution.
SAMPSON GENESE . I am clerk of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' synagogue. I produce the superintendent registrar's register of the marriage of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews—I was present, and saw the prisoner married to Jane Harris, on the 18th of May, 1843—(register read)—both the parties were of the Jewish profession—Jane Harris was a German Jewess—they were married in No. 62, Skinner-street, Bishopsgate—I saw the entry made—I have not seen Jane Harris since.
Cross-examined by MR. BALLANTINE. Q. You did not know Harris before? A. No—the prisoner had been in our school—we have only two sects among us, the Spanish and Portuguese Jews, and the German Jews—we have our different places of worship—I should not consider that I went to an orthodox synagogue if I went to a German Jews'—the ceremonies of marriage, and other ceremonies of the two sects, do not vary—the only difference is in the pronunciation of the Hebrew—the, words of the ceremonial are identical—the corresponding officers attend, and there is no difference in the belief of the German and Portuguese Jews—there is no distinction in the creed.
SOLOMON ALMOS NINO . I am secretary to the synagogue of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews—I am the registrar of the marriages at their synagogue—I produce the superintendent-registrar's certificate of a marriage between Jacob Saltiell and Jane Harris—I register the marriages at the synagogue—(by virtue of this certificate, the marriage takes place)—this is a correct entry of the marriage—I was present—the prisoner was brought up in our school—he is the person married to Jane Harris—I do not know her—she is described as Jane Hums, 62, Skinner-street, Bishopsgate—the marriage took place according to the ceremonies of the Jewish religion.
Cross-examined. Q. Is there no distinction of sects among the Jews? A. Not any—we have no second creed, nor difference in the ceremonials—no. person can be married without permission of the warden, and that is given on producing the certificate—without that a marriage would not be legal, according to our usages—it might be a valid marriage in point of law—the prisoner attended our place of worship at the time of his marriage, and subsequently to that, till very lately.
ELEAZER HART . I live in White Lion-street, Norton-Falgate—Jane Harris is my niece—on the 18th of May, last year, I was present at a marriage, according to the Jewish rites and ceremonies, at her mother's house, between her and the prisoner—she is of the Jewish persuasion, and is still alive.
HARRIET BATES DAVISON . I am eighteen years old, and live with my father in Jamaica-street, Commercial-road. At the beginning of this year, I had known the prisoner about six months—my father and I then lodged in Sydney-square with the prisoner—I knew he was married—his wife was living in the same house the whole of the time my family lodged there—we left the house shortly after Easter—I saw the prisoner occasionally after I left—in April he made a proposal of marriage—I accepted it—we were married as Christians at West Ham church on the 16th of May.
Cross-examined. Q. Did you know his former wife? A. Yes, they had been married in the Jewish persuasion—I believed he was not of the Jewish persuasion—his wife knew that the banns were published between him and me—it was not made a matter of concealment, that I am aware of—his wife was out from morning to night.
MR. PAYNE. Q. How do you know that his first wife knew of his going to be married? A. She has told me so at his mother's house within the last fortnight—his mother was present at the time.
RICHARD GOLLEDGE . I am parish clerk of West Ham—I have the register here—I have an entry of a marriage between the prisoner and Harriet Bates Davison.

This gives me a ton of clues for even more research!!!  If memory serves me correct, somewhere I have a record of John's imprisonment.   Guilty of bigamy.  There's more... perhaps tomorrow's blog.

We now know that this Eleazer Hart was the brother of Rachel Hart Harris, Jane Harris Saltiel's mother.  And we know that he was a brother to Michael Hart who's son, E. S. Hart was at Cotopaxi.

So we can prove that E. S. Hart and E. H. Saltiel were 1st cousins, once removed.  E. H. Saltiel would have been second cousins to all of Hart's children.  The story just continues to grow.

This post was updated to show the new family tree.
